What is Pollution Under Control Certificate / PUC Certificate?
The Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1989 under Rule 115(2) makes it mandatory to check the emission levels of vehicles and make sure the emissions are below the fixed levels.
The government authorizes certain centers to test the emissions. These authorized centers test the emission levels and hands over a Pollution Under Control Certificate. This Certificate ensures that your vehicle`s emissions levels are under the Government fixed levels.
How to check Pollution Control Certificate Validity Online?
The Parivahan portal and app by the Govt of India offers a wide range of services regarding vehicle related things. With the Parivahan portal you can also check the validity and other details of the Pollution Under Control Certificate of your vehicle.
Step 1: Visit https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/puc. Which is the official link to the PUC section of Parivahan portal.
Step 2: Enter your Vehicle Registration Number and the last 5 characters of your Chassis Number. Also fill in the security code in the image in the respective field.
Step 3: Click on PUC Details button and you will be directed to a new page where all the details regarding your Pollution Under Control Certificate, Including the validity of the certificate will be shown.
Validity of Pollution Under Control Certificate / PUC Certificate
All BS 4 Vehicles will get a PUC Certificate valid for 1 Year. Vehicles Registered after 2017 are BS 4 Vehicles.
Non-BS 4 Vehicles will get a PUC Certificate with a validity of 6 Months.
It is important that Once the validity is expiring, the PUC certificate has to be renewed after testing. It is Mandatory by law that Vehicles must have a Valid PUC Certificate.
Fine for not having a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate
The Motor Vehicle department will levy a fine for the absence of not having a Valid PUC certificate in your vehicle.
The fine for first violation is a maximum of 3 months imprisonment and/or ₹10,000.
For second violation a maximum of 6 months of imprisonment and/or ₹10,000.
How to find Govt. Approved PUC Centers
You can find a list of Govt. Approved PUC centers in your locality. Log on to the Parivahan Website and click on the PUC section. Click on PUC Center list. In the PUC Center list webpage choose your state and nearest RTO office name. All Centers approved by Government will be listed. Choose your center and drive in and the emission level test can be done under 10 minutes. The PUC certificate will be issued instantly. The certificate will have the validity date, your vehicle details and the emission levels of the vehicle. The certificate details (validity.etc) can be availed online by the steps mentioned above.
