Let’s discuss HEIC Image Format. In the world of the digital era, people use to store their personal data such as images, videos, and documents in digital files. This led to the origin of new words such as Digital Images and Digital Videos. As the situation became similar, the importance of the digital format gradually increased. The most prominent in this genre is the HEIF format. Today in this article, we will discuss more about HEIF / HEIC image format and its benefits.
What is HEIF Image format?
The abbreviation of HEIF is High-Efficiency Image File format. HEIC file is a space-saving image format. It is actually a digital container used to store images or sequences of images for personal or professional purposes. The same files end up in the .hief extension and with .hiefs extension for a sequence of files. This convenient format was developed in 2015 by the Moving Picture Expert Group to compress images without losing quality. The format overpowered all other legacy formats such as JPEG, GIF, and PNG.
Many multinational technology companies have used the same format, including Microsoft, Apple, and Canon. In this, Apple used HEIF as their default image and video format in their iOS 11 series with the help of the HEIC variant.
What is HEIC Image Format?
The HEIF format has a different variant, one of which is HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Coding), which is very popular because it uses in the iOS 11 series to distinguish images and image sequence files from the video content on its devices. The same HEIC files end with .heic extinction.
Advantages of HEIF Format
The greatest advantage of the HEIF format is that it uses all its advanced features to compress image size without losing its quality. If you save images in HEIF format rather than JPEG or any other format, the file size might get reduced to half the exact size of JPEG format. So, you can store an additional number of images on your device.
When we compare JPEG files, JPEG files produce 8-bit lossy images, but HEIF can store all 16-bit lossy or lossless images. Additionally, the HEIF format effectively stores all files in small sizes. As a result, you can quickly upload all images to online services and use less storage space. (iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.)
Apple and Microsoft support the HEIF format on their devices, so opening files and viewing them is not a difficult task. As we go deeper, the software can decode HEIF content and HEIC images for iOS 11 and later. But Apple’s A9 chip and later devices can only do hardware – decode HEIF content. When it comes to Windows OS; Software-decoding HEIF content can only get done for Windows 10 with updates from April 2018 onwards.
The HEIF format has some minor drawbacks; the images end up in HEIF or HEIC files and do not work everywhere. This is why iOS and Windows devices automatically convert images to JPEG format when you attach HEIF files to an email. Also, no browser version today supports HEIF files. The only way to access support is to install any third-party extensions. So, this is all the information about the HIEF/HEIC Image format.
